Shipshape

SHIPSHAPE a public art project by Monique de Vlieger for the Harwich Festival of the Arts 2023.

This year I have come up with the idea to create a container ship out of fabric and ask people to make ‘containers’ to stack on top.

The containers will be flat pieces of fabric measuring 20x10cm. You can use any textile technique you like to make your container, sew on some colourful buttons and beads or do some intricate embroidery, anything goes.

Try to get the measurements as accurately as possible otherwise we end up with a wobbly stack of containers.

Navyard has kindly agreed to let us use their fence to display our ship. The ship will be about 7m long and will take approximately 125 containers.

So get creative and help me make another colourful artwork to brighten up the Harwich quayside over the summer season.

Finished containers can be handed in at the Harwich Arts and Heritage Centre, weekdays between 10.00 and 16.00 and on the third Saturday of the month between 10.00 and 13.00. Closing date for the containers will be 31st May. For more information email monique@harwichfestival.com or phone 07934 429 264
