The Harwich Festival has joined forces with Film183, a film society established to support the Electric Palace cinema, to present a special movie day for all-comers.

The Film183 committee elected to show two bio-pictures reflecting both art and music.
The afternoon screening will be of Derek Jarman’s 1986 film Caravaggio, a fictionalised account of the life of the Baroque painter starring Nigel Terry, Sean Bean and Tilda Swinton. It was entered into the 36th Berlin International Film Festival where it won the Silver Bear for an outstanding single achievement.

The evening presentation will be of Ken Russell’s 1974 vivid portrayal Mahler, the last but one of his sequence of films of the great composers, with Robert Powell in the title role. Bernard Rose in The Guardian said: “What drives it is the music – bawdy, vulgar, violent, sweeping, cloying, stunning music set to pictures that switch from naturalistic drama to pastiche, fantasy and history.”

Caravaggio is at 2.30pm, Mahler at 7.30pm. Ticket price for each screening is £8 & available via the Electric Palace.
